James R. “Jim” Dutra, age 93 of Dighton, passed away on November 8, 2023 at Morton Hospital after a brief illness.
He was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Rose) Dutra.
While at Dighton High School, Jim excelled at sports, including football, track, basketball and baseball. Later in life, he also golfed and bowled, competing in various leagues.
Jim was employed as a printer throughout his life. He began his printing career at the New Bedford Standard Times and later worked for many years at Ad-A-Day Printing in Taunton, eventually retiring from the company. He was a devoted parishioner and volunteer of St Peter’s Church and was a parishioner and usher at St. Nicholas of Myra Parish in Dighton, following the closure of St. Peter’s Church.
Nieces and nephews remember Jim as a kind, generous uncle who enjoyed taking them to the beach and movies; several of them also remember him as a willing and patient driving instructor.
He is survived by his brother Lawrence Dutra, many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, nephews and great-great-nieces, nephews, his beloved home health aide Annette Walmsley and his canine companion Molly. He was the brother of the late Robert Dutra, David Dutra, Frank Dutra, John Dutra, George Dutra, Thomas Dutra, Alice (Dutra) Perry, Mary (Dutra) Francis, Margaret (Dutra) Pires, Caroline (Dutra) Suite and Dorothy Dutra.
Mr. Dutra’s funeral with visitation will be held on Thursday, November 16, 2023 at 8:30am from the Silva Funeral Home 80 Broadway (at Saint Mary’s Square) Taunton, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to begin at 10:00am in Saint Nicholas of Myra Church, Spring Street, Dighton.
Interment will be held privately in Saint Patrick Cemetery, Somerset.
