Fatima Moitoza of Taunton, passed away on October 17, 2023 at
Morton Hospital. Her sudden loss leaves her family and friends in a
state of disbelief and deep, painful sorrow. She was 67.
Born in Faial, Azores, she was the beloved daughter of the late Manuel
and Etelvina (Silva) Moitoso and sister to the late Mary (Moitoza) Welch
of Lynn, MA.
Fatima emigrated to the United States as a child in 1960 and attended
Taunton High School before receiving her Bachelors of Arts in Theater
Studies from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1978. Her
post-college years were spent working on touring theater productions
around the United States. In 1984, she returned home to Taunton,
where she lived the remainder of her life, working as a retail manager
and supervisor for Rite Aid, Filene’s, and Macy’s, before her retirement
in 2021.
Fatima loved spending time with family and friends and her baking prowess was the delight of every
celebration. A voracious reader, avowed Anglophile, and staunch advocate for women’s rights, her
thoughtful advice and engaging conversation helped mentor and shape the lives of those close to her.
She leaves behind aunts, uncles, cousins, godchildren, and friends who will dearly miss her warmth,
humor, thoughtfulness, and generosity of heart and spirit.
To honor Fatima’s life, relatives and friends are invited to attend a
funeral held at the Silva Funeral Home in Taunton on Monday, October
23, 2023. Visitation will be held at 9am with a funeral service
beginning at 10am in the Chapel of the Silva Funeral Home 80
Broadway (at Saint Mary’s Square) Taunton.
Interment will follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Taunton.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Saint
Jude Children’s Hospital or the World Central Kitchen.
